Hospitality structure located in a medieval village in the mountains of Pistoia, run by the same local family for generations. Home-style environment is particularly representative for the Italian family-run hospitality of the first half of the 20th century, generally marked by the decline of the aristocratic seasonal residence, introduction of paid holidays and the rise of the middle class. Not originally tourism in the modern sense, this structure stands for the mountain villeggiatura tradition of the “old Italy” during the economic boom, particularly in Tuscany where families escaped the heat spending the summer at altitude with fresh air, walking and slower rhythms. The hotel was almost an extension of the domestic household. Early mountain hotels don’t look like modern resorts, as they were essentially places where a family could live temporarily rather than simply sleep. Arriving villeggianti, due to their extended stays, constituted an entire parallel seasonal society with the hotel becoming a bridge between the local subsistence economy and the urban economy.
By the 1960s, the old villeggiatura culture was being absorbed into mass tourism, bringing significant changes to the concept of hospitality in Italy and elsewhere.
